We all know that left handed people are the only ones in their right minds! For the smaller (and superior) portion of the population, our right side of the brain is more developed and because of this the left side of the body tends to be dominant.

While the cause of being left handed is still not fully understood there are many theories as to why. I think that the Geschwind Theory makes most sense.

Norman Geschwind theorized that higher testosterone, before you are born, somehow keeps the left hemisphere of the brain from growing as fast as the right side. This does fit in with one of the left handed facts that more men are left handed than women.

Left handed people have to suffer through continual small frustrations simply because we are left handed. So much in our world assumes that we are all right handed and that can be frustrating.

From school desks, scissors and even computer mice and keyboards, it seems that people rarely think about us, the Lefties, when they design these items.

There are many superstitions attached to being left handed. Unfortunately for us, a lot of them are less than favorable. Often the Devil is associated with the left side or the left hand.

Some would say that if you hear ringing in your left ear that someone is cursing you but if it is in the right that someone is saying good things.

If you feel your left palm itch supposedly you are going to lose money but if your right palm is itchy then someone will be giving you money.

There are some superstitions in favor of lefties. If you dig coal out of the ground from under your left foot in the spring your luck will be quite good. Some tribes, like the Zuni think that left is older and wiser than the right.

Left Handed Facts:

Being Left handed is great. It seems that we have a leg up on some things like politics. Did you know that a disproportionate amount of our presidents have been left handed? In recent history Ronald Regan, the first Bush, Bill Clinton and both Barack Obama and John McCain are all left handed.

Being left handed may also offer those of us who are college graduates 10-15% more in earnings. Not too shabby!

It stands to reason that left handed people are also left handed kissers and huggers as well. How many times have we all gone in for a peck on a cheek and ended up bonking heads? It seems that it has something to do with being a left handed person!

It is amazing how many interesting left handed facts there are. Did you know that Mensa believes that about 20% of their group are left handed people! That is significantly higher than the estimated 13% of the population. Also it seems that the majority of parrots are left-footed. Who knew?
